Gele: A covering for thy head..

Gele” is a yoruba word from south-western Nigeria for an element of clothing worn on the head of a woman.

It is an article of fashion for religious purposes and occasions such as wedding ceremonies and funerals. At traditional events in Nigeria, one is bound to find a good number of guests adorning a Gele fabric. Overtime, It has been given other names such as canopy and head gear. I have a feeling the “canopy” name was birth from the unusual funny gele styles of a popular Nollywood actress “Madam Kofo”.

Yes, Madam Kofo, you remember her? Lol.

Gele fabric comes in different designs and textures therefore, it is adviceable to opt for one you are skilled enough to manipulate. It has made so much impact in the life of women to the extent that Gele tying has turned into big business in Nigeria. I saw an advert on Instagram on Gele tying classes for which the V.I.P fee was 25,000 naira. My instant thought was “abeg, who die? Are u kidding me? A whole 25k to tie Gele? God please do and come” lol.

The exhorbitant fee shows how much of an impact it is in Nigeria. For those who have learnt how to tie it and those who just want to look at nice gele styles for inspiration, below are different styles to try out with a Gele fabric.
